Why Farming Matters

The two packs, one for primary (Key Stage 2) and one for secondary school (Key Stage 3) age children, each contain a teachers’ booklet; a DVD containing a video of farmers talking about their lives and work and a digital photo gallery; photo cards and a set of colourful posters exploring aspects of farming. The packs have been designed to encourage young people to think more carefully about farming and food. The activities can be used to support specific areas of curriculum study or as a means to stimulate thought and debate in the classroom.
At a time when the role of farming in generating our own food supplies is increasingly topical and in an era when sustainable management of scarce resources is of global concern, public perception of UK farming does not always reflect the core business of agriculture and horticulture.

Why Farming Matters

The NFU calls the Why Farming Matters packs ‘the most significant development in teaching materials on farming for many years’ and they aim to provide clear up-to-date information and open up debate on all matters agricultural.
The packs contain information on horticulture and dairy, livestock, arable and poultry farming, giving pupils a comprehensive knowledge of this hugely important UK industry.

The packs are available from the FACE website at:
