Valuing Diversity: Towards Mutual Respect and Understanding
This is a hugely useful resource for teachers wishing to convey the values underpinning good citizenship. It is a new edition of a booklet originally published in 2001 and it has been completely updated to include a Muslim perspective on dialogue and understanding. Valuing Diversity contains a range of innovative and stimulating classroom activities for pupils aged 11 to 16. The main focus of the activities is interfaith dialogue and how interfaith tolerance can be used as a model for conflict resolution in many situations. The pack is designed to be used flexibly within the classroom. Teachers may progress through all the material and build a whole programme of study around it or they can dip in for one-off sessions on a particular topic. Valuing Diversity ties in closely with the English and Welsh Citizenship curriculum and Religious Education requirements but the activities are appropriate for and can be used in many different school environments. The booklet was sponsored by the Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations, the Centre for the Study of Muslim-Jewish Relations and the Society for Dialogue and Action. It was launched in February by the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams.
