Farming the Environment was a joint initiative between Magenta and FACE (Farming and Countryside Education). The Environment Agency wanted to raise awareness of the challenges facing those responsible for the management and maintainance of the farming environment, we identified opportunities to do this through the teaching of Geography and Citizenship at Key Stage 3 and in preparation for GCSE exams. The resulting publication has been enthusiastically received by teachers who value its thoughtful and practical approach to a complex topic. Five separate activities lead pupils through a range of experiences including communication, decision making and cognitive dissonance. Collectively they help them understand that complex issues require creative solutions and often need to balance a range of different objectives and points of view. |
