A Teacher’s Guide to Health
Related Fitness at Key Stage 1.
When Dairy UK approached Magenta for ideas to support
primary schools we were keen to discuss an opportunity
we had identified a long time ago and never had the
chance to address: PE in primary schools. We were aware
of research that illustrated the long term importance
of physical exercise in young children but also knew
from talking to teachers that very few of them felt
confident about teaching PE. Dairy UK agreed to sponsor
the development of A Teacher’s Guide to Health Related
Fitness at Key Stage 1.
We were thrilled when Dr Craig Williams from the Children’s
Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHERC) agreed
to write the pack. CHERC is an international centre
of excellence and his involvement assured the pack
would be right up to date with best practice.
A pilot project allowed us to test our approach which
was designed to help teachers integrate health related
fitness activities into their existing teaching schemes.
The resulting pack provides teachers with practical
activities and question and answer banks designed to
help them raise pupils’ knowledge and understanding
about their bodies, their own development and the importance
of exercise.
Further funding from the European Union enabled us
to shoot a teacher training programme covering all
the key points from the pack. The programme includes
demonstration lessons with KS1 pupils and interviews
with pupils and teachers. The latest version of the
pack includes a DVD and a pdf copy of the teachers’
guide.
As far as we know the project is unique in being designed
specifically to meet the needs of pupils aged 5–7.
